Feel

The feel of these irons is absolutely amazing. They are soft and provide a nice crisp click at impact.  The aura around these irons within the industry is well deserved and we now understand why touring professionals like forgings by Miura.

Looks
In a single word – stunning. The quality and finish of these irons is unmatched in the industry.  The CB-201 irons have clean lines and a satin finish incorporated into a traditional design favored by many players.

'Smoke Essentials'

Japanese golf clb manufacturer Miura Golf (www.miuragolf.com) - which has been making forged, mild-steel irons for nearly five decades - has taken irons to the next level with the Limited Edition Small Blade forged iron. The new Small Blade irons - like all Miura Golf high-end clubs - are hand-made by the company's legendary 65-year-old founder, Katsuhiro Miura, whose forged clubmaking skills over the past 49 years have prompted the Japanese to claim he has "Gold's hands." The Small Blade iron features a nickel (chrome) finish, and follows the fundamental design and functional concepts of all Miura Golf clbs. However, the Small Blade's muscle-back head is about 15 percent smaller than the company's Tournament Blade iron ehad, and the new iron's face is thicker than the Tournament Blade's face, resulting in more shot stability. The irons retail in sets of three for $1,375 per set.

If money is no object and you are an excellent player then you simply must treat yourself to set of Miura Blades. In terms of both performance and looks they are impossible to fault and when this is allied to the kind of fitting process we outline page 102, the result is a set of irons about as good as money can buy. the only reason these irons did not win our test is simply down to the price, which is likely to run into four figures."

Can smaller be better? Blade lengths on Player's irons are about half an inch shorter than Super Gamer-Improvement Irons. But MIURA goes even further with its Limited Edition Blades or "Baby Blades' (top left) that are nearly seven-eights of an inch shorter than an iron such as CALLAWAY's Fusion Wide Sole (bottm left).

A larger head can result in better stability on off-center hits but can be harder to manipulate and have less feel, says Katsuhiro Miura, Miura's legendary designer. "We want to create simple tools. Our small blade is designed to easily return to square at impact."

Miura Golf
Miura Golf has produced the high-end CB 301 irons. The company says the CB 301 irons have the forgiveness of a cavity-back with the playability of a blade. They have redefined weight distribution within the head. The center of gravity is pulled towards the hosel and more weight is moved out towards the toe. The first feature makes the head close more rapidly and the second slows it down. This grind blends these two forces so that the clubhead squares more easily.

Miura forges the head and the hosel separately with equipment that was custom designed for each specific part. The company says the result is superior feel and a perfectly balanced head, and every hosel is milled and symmetrical, with the tightest bore tolerances of any manufacturer. Miura's forging techniques rearrange the molecular structure of the mild steel in a pattern that is uniform throughout the clubhead, and Miura also uses a proprietary "spin welding" process to produce a consistent hosel. Miura CB 301 irons begin at $1,250 and can exceed $1,500 depending on custom shafts and other custom features. Visit www.miuragolf.com.

"The sky's the limit"

There's an old saying that you can't buy a game in golf. But plenty of big spenders certainly try. If money is no concern, here is a set of clubs (custom-made, of course) that will put a real dent in your wallet, if not your scorecard.

IRON
Miura. 3-iron through P-wedge. $2,300. You could buy a great set of irons for $800-$1,000, but Miura irons are in a different class. The heads are triple-forged (double is normal) for ultimate precision. They are built with the Element 21 shaft made from metal found only in Russia. The shaft's lively tip adds distance and has terrific shock absorption.

"RED HOT IRONS"

"Looking to buy a gift for a serious player? Then check out Miura, the best-kept secret in the game. If you haven’t heard of these Japanese clubs, you’re not alone. For 47 years, company founder Katsuhiro Miura has been crafting clubs for major golf-equipment companies, but has never sold them under his own name. When pros need to play their sponsor’s brand but want something even better, then Miura steps in. Carrying the labels of respected brands, his clubs have won the Masters and the U.S. Open. They’re also hidden in the bags of some of the game’s greatest players, as well as wealthy enthusiasts. Now Miura has started selling his own brand of beautiful clubs with forged steel heads created through a 14-step process similar to that used in making traditional Japanese knives. Miura makes only irons and putters. They’re sold through the country’s top on-course pro shops and custom-fitting retailers."

This season’s irons offer the latest refinements in power, feel and forgiveness

Miura CB-301
For nearly five decades Katsuhiro Miura has been quietly building forged irons for Tour players at his Japanese foundry; before his deal with Nike, Tiger played Titleist irons made by Miura. Recently Miura Golf began retailing its own irons—long a favorite among Internet connoisseurs (that is, gearheads)—in North America. Tight quality controls and a time-consuming forging process give the new player’s cavity back CB-301 a smooth feel. A nice set of shaft options includes the strong yet lightweight Nippon line. $1,149. Call 866-466-4872 or visit www.miuragolf.com.

But beware, these stunning tri-ground blades (triple forged for a tight molecular structure) are for better players only, with a thin topline and a centre of gravity closer to the heel than most irons. The CB-301 package can be completely customized to include pured shafts, Tour grinds, preferred lofts and lies or any other personal requirements, while a custom-built set made by the man himself can be yours for a mere £10,000."
