A Note from Adam Barr About the Sendai Earthquake and Tsunami,
and the Situation in Japan:
Since the terrible events of March 11 in northeastern Japan, we've been getting a lot of questions and good wishes from people all over the world of golf -- but most of all, from our Miura family. We greatly appreciate everyone's concern, and I know Mr. Miura and everyone in Japan appreciates it too.
We're relieved to report that everyone at Miura is unharmed, and to the best of our knowledge, their families are fine as well. Our associates in Tokyo were inconvenienced, but unhurt.
Of course, geography insulated Miura headquarters from the worst of the disaster. Himeji, the Hyogo Prefecture city in which Miura has its factory, is far west and south of Sendai. It's a west and a little north of Osaka, one of central Japan's leading cities. That puts it 418 miles (672 km) by air from Sendai and 292 miles (470 km) from Tokyo. On the day of the quake, Japan's entire Pacific Coast was under tsunami warnings. But Himeji is far enough inland to have been out of any real danger.
Naturally, our chief concern is for the people of our company's home country. They are stoically fighting enormous difficulties to regain safety and begin to rebuild.
From overseas, one of the best things we can do for Japan is to continue to provide the economic opportunities she will need to make a robust recovery. So feel free to ask us questions, learn about the clubs, get fitted, and order what you want. We will do our best to continue to serve your golf needs and desires in an appropriate and conscientious way.
Thank you, as always, for being dedicated members of the Miura family. In Japanese, the word "ganbaru" means to persevere, to do one's best. To encourage each other on fields of play and in difficult circumstances, well-wishers often say, "Ganbatte! 頑張って!" So let's wish 頑張って! to our Japanese friends, and support them through to recovery.
MIURA GOLF NAMES CHARLIE GERBERVICE PRESIDENT—U.S. DISTRIBUTION
VANCOUVER, British Columbia —Japanese golf-club manufacturer Miura Golf—which has been making the world’s highest-quality forged irons for 45 years—has named Charlie Gerber Vice President—U.S. Distribution, the company announced today.
Gerber—a graduate of Florida State University—has enjoyed a golf-industry career spanning more than 15 years that includes various sales representative and sales management positions, most of which involved restructuring and refocusing the sales forces at each company. Most recently Gerber was Sales Manager with Sundog Eyewear Midwest. His other golf industry experience includes stints at Drive Headwear LLC, Golf Coach Inc., Teardrop Golf, and as an Independent Sales Rep for Tommy Armour Golf.
In his new job as Miura’s Vice President—U.S. Distribution, Gerber will work directly with the company’s 77 dealers across the country as opposed to managing a network of independent sales reps. Gerber will also be charged with adding qualified dealers in markets where Miura lacks representation.
“Charlie has the exact skills Miura needs at this important jumping-off point into the next stage of our growth,” says Adam Barr, president of Miura. “In both consumer products and golf, he has shown a seasoned sensitivity to the needs of consumers and retail partners. And his manner, both as a businessman and a golfer, has inspired trust and confidence in countless associates. We’re very proud he’s with us.”
Upon his graduation from Florida State, Gerber climbed the consumer products corporate ladder at the Dial Corp. for 14 years, followed by two years as Director of Sales at American Companies before entering the golf business.
“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to work with Miura Golf’s enthusiastic dealers nationwide as well as help the company gain traction with new qualified dealers in areas of the country currently without Miura representation,” Gerber says. “Once we have all of our dealers in place it’s just a matter of giving more golfers the opportunity to experience the incredible quality of our product.”
